ZIP Roller Shutters Misteral: Engineering Precision and Structural Safety

When designing external shading for large glass surfaces and pergolas, the key parameters are dimensional stability and wind load resistance. Misteral ZIP screen blinds are engineered as a technically advanced system for shading large spans (up to 6 x 3 m), ensuring optimal fabric tension without wrinkling.

Special attention is given to the installation of blinds on bioclimatic pergolas, prioritizing structural strength over visual compromises.

Technical Rationale: Why a non-integrated ZIP blind is a structurally superior solution

In the industry, “fully integrated” blinds are often used, where the cassette with fabric is inserted inside the pergola’s supporting profile. This solution requires modifying the load-bearing profile – changing a closed profile into an open “U” shape – significantly reducing its load capacity and torsional resistance.

Misteral’s engineering approach is different: the ZIP blind is installed under the supporting profile (in a purpose-designed, aesthetically shaped cassette), offering key structural advantages:

Structural Homogeneity:

The pergola’s supporting profile remains closed and connected on all four sides, preserving maximum moment of inertia and torsional stiffness.

Maximum Wind Resistance (up to 200 km/h):

As the load-bearing structure is not weakened by cutouts for blind installation, the pergola maintains declared resistance to extreme wind loads. The structure behaves as a monolithic unit.

Service Accessibility:

This design allows easy access to the blind mechanism for maintenance without affecting the pergola’s structural integrity. The result is a system that ensures long-term safety and stability while maintaining clean aesthetic lines.

Models Based on Wind Zones and Architectural Requirements

All Misteral ZIP blinds are equipped with motorized operation and a zipper (ZIP) system that runs along guides, providing insect screen functionality and high wind impact resistance.

Depending on site-specific requirements, we offer three versions:

1. ZIP Blind M150 – For High Wind Areas

System developed for locations with demanding weather conditions (coast, open areas).

  • Cassette Dimensions: 150 x 150 mm.
  • Wind Class: Resistance up to 140 km/h (depending on fabric size).
  • Application: Closing pergola side surfaces, shading large panoramic walls.

2. ZIP Blind M130 – Standard Residential Use

Optimal balance between cassette size and performance.

  • Cassette Dimensions: 130 x 130 mm.
  • Wind Class: Resistance up to 120 km/h.
  • Application: Shading windows, balconies, and standard pergolas.

3. Under-Facade ZIP Blind – Integrated Architectural Solution

Designed for installation during construction or building renovation.

  • Installation: Cassette fully integrated into the facade envelope (suitable for both ventilated and contact facades).
  • Visual Effect: Only minimal guides are visible; in the raised position, the blind is almost invisible.
  • Requirement: Coordination needed during the design phase.

Materials and Structural Adaptation

Each ZIP blind component is dimensioned according to the project’s specific load requirements.

High-Tech Fabrics (Copaco & Serge Ferrari):

Composite “screen” fabrics provide high tensile strength. Perforated structure allows controlled light transmission and prevents a complete greenhouse effect, while maintaining visual contact with the surroundings.

Structurally Dimensioned Guides:

For stability of large-area fabrics, the appropriate guide profile is selected:

Dimensions: 33x53 mm | 33x110 mm | 33x130 mm | 33x150 mm

Surface Treatment:

The aluminum structure is powder-coated in RAL colors, ensuring resistance to corrosion and UV radiation.

Misteral ZIP blinds represent a technical solution where structural requirements define the form, guaranteeing durability and investment safety.

Frequently Asked Questions About ZIP Blinds

Can I see outside through a lowered blind?

Yes. We use perforated “Screen” fabrics (Copaco/Serge Ferrari), which allow you to see outside during the day while preventing outsiders from looking in (privacy). The fabric also reflects most of the solar heat.

Why isn’t the blind hidden in the pergola’s support profile?

For safety and structural reasons. Opening the profile to hide the blind would weaken the pergola’s load-bearing capacity. Installing the blind under the profile (in an aesthetic cassette) keeps the structure closed and homogeneous, capable of withstanding winds up to 200 km/h.

Can the ZIP blind withstand strong bora winds?

Our ZIP blinds (especially model M150) are tested for high wind loads (up to 140 km/h). The fabric is guided and secured with the ZIP system, preventing it from being torn out by wind. However, we recommend raising the blinds during extreme storm forecasts.

Does the ZIP blind also function as a mosquito screen?

Yes. Since the fabric is secured along the full height in the side guides and finished at the bottom with a weighted bar, insects cannot enter the pergola.
